The Amazons were a mythical race of warrior women, noted for their skills in archery and horsemanship. In Greek art, the Amazons were often depicted battling such heroes as Heracles, Achilles and Theseus. The society dominated by women, at the outer edges of the world known to the Greeks. Classical Greeks never ceased to be astounded at such role-reversals. Women in classical Greek society were expected to be passive and dependent on males. >>>

This work is a group-portrait, depicting Dr. Tulp giving anatomy lesson. The Doctor is standing behind the dead body and being surrounded by seven viewers, some of them are probably doctors. Just like these viewers, we are active participant of the lecture, being part of the audience. These lectures were open to the public. >>>

Romanticism and its Impact on Art

Neoclassicism's rationality enforced a desire for a political, intellectual, emotional, and for all kinds of freedom. Romanticism had the answer for the principle of individual freedom. It became a parallel movement to Neoclassicism. Sunken Relief

This sunken relief is from the ancient Egypt and was composed during the Amarna period. King Akhenaten is seen here with his wife, Nefertiti. As we look at most of this period's artwork, the central is the sun disc of Aten, shining down -sunrays indicated by lines, with the ankh symbol of life at the end- at the Royal Family as they worshipping him, the only god. >>>
